About this deal

This causes Auden to think about making a change, prompting her to visit her father, Heidi and Thisbe for the summer at their house in Colby, North Carolina.

Auden's mother, Victoria, is a haughty English professor with high expectations for her daughter and a habit of looking down on anything that threatens their connection, like Auden's dad, step-mom, and her summer in Colby.

Now she has the chance to spend a carefree summer with her dad and his new family in the charming beach town where they live. My favorite part of the movie was Auden’s budding friendship with Maggie (Laura Kariuki), who is even more lively and smart than I imagined.

I love how she intertwined her characters into more than one book fitting it all into a small town concept. A daughter of academics and an exemplary student, her mother objects to her wanting to spend time with her father. When Robert implies that Heidi asked Auden to visit to be a babysitter, Heidi states she invited her so Robert could spend time with his daughters. Along for the Ride is a fairly simple story, sure, but it feels right and true and satisfying, thanks to Dessen’s deft touch.

She feels inspired by Hollis’s adventurous spirit, for she has never traveled and can’t think of a picture of her that would qualify as The Best of Times. Tired from her regular life and as a new graduate of high school, she decides to spend the summer with her father, her perky new stepmother, and a new sister.

Then, she receives a present from her older brother Hollis, who has been trekking around Asia: a picture of him at the Taj Mahal in a frame with the label “The Best of Times. After being accepted into Defriese University upon graduating high school, Auden is not sure on how to spend her summer. As Auden gets to know her stepmother Heidi and her new friend Maggie, she unlearns a lot of this, something that was amazing to see both spelled out and conveyed in subtle moments. They kiss with the waves crashing around them and their friends cheering in the background — very sweet and appropriately cinematic.Sarah Dessen is the author of six stunning teen novels: Just Listen , The Truth about Forever , Lock and Key , That Summer and What Happened to Goodbye .
