About this deal

I think there’s something perfect about the way Ennis is throwing all sorts of ideas at the wall here, and even if none of it really sticks, it’s a really fun ride, but it’s also a mess, and at times it feels like he’s using his irreverence as an excuse for lazy writing. Garth Ennis · Liam Sharp Batman: Reptilian (Volume 1) was a limited series, published by DC Black Label.

Then again, he does conjure the sort of fever-dream mania/dream logic that defines a lot of the movies I love. It used to be Batman, but something far more frightening than a mere man stalks the shadows—and it's after Gotham's villains. Batman initially thinks this trope is in play, with a bigger, badder villain taking out all the other criminals in Gotham, but it soon becomes clear something else is going on.One of DC’s “Black Label” titles which denotes a more mature tone to the story and on that score alone it certainly delivers, a series of gruesome attacks on Gothams villains cause Batman and Killer Croc to go looking for the creature responsible. There's a crime wave in Gotham, and several of the city's most notorious criminals have been turning up.

He also finds Joker to be the single most annoying character in all of comic books, which is an unfathomably based take. There are definitely shades of Dave McKean and Bill Sienkiewicz in Sharp’s gloomy, expressionistic pages, but his page compositions make these pages absolutely singular. The gist is some weird, new creature is rampaging through Batman’s rogues gallery, and now Batman has to figure out what it is and what exactly it wants. The art is occasionally very good (pretty unique rendering for a comic), but unfortunately it's more often confusing or distracting. I think most Batman fans have a definitive version in their mind and Ennis' is a jarring change that doesn't come off as very heroic. No a nabízí nám tu více satirickou verzi Batmana, kdy tu máte na něj více cynický pohled ve kterém vám dojde že on vlastně není taková dobrá duše a že i jeho konání místy se dá srovnat s padouchi se kterými válčí. I'm waffling whether to give it 1 or 2 stars, but it left a bad taste in my mouth, despite some sparks of creativity.
