About this deal

Bone Shard magic is comprised of just that— bone shards— and every single citizen is required by law to provide one to the Emperor. The story builds in layers and whilst foreshadowing allows you to guess at some aspects of the plot there are still plenty of twists and surprises to engage and hold your attention.

Every inhabitant of this empire gets a bone shard taken from them as a child, which is then used to power the hybrid animal-esque bone constructs that serve under the emperor. However, there’s a chance that she might lose her chance if she doesn’t prove herself in some unconventional way, which was surprising to me.We don’t know much about her besides the fact that she is a woman on an island where no one seems to have any memories of how they got there or where they were before.

The former two show us other aspects of the empire, and also addresses the theme of class differences in romantic relationships, while the latter keeps us guessing and ties into a complex plot. I won’t deny that I really felt it and the way the plot inched along, particularly in the beginning. Lin is the Emperor's daughter and she spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets. The empire spans hundreds of drifting islands and was established by the Sukai family, who defeated the Alanga people that once ruled the islands with their supernatural powers.

I wish their part however was more important like Lin and Jovis’ because some of their chapters didn’t add much to the story. The Bone Shard Daughter begins with a spark of intrigue that ignites into a thrilling adventure you cannot miss-with a unique (and painful! I greatly appreciated that the author was able to create some elements that were very low stakes and pleasant while also choosing to not pull punches with some gut-wrenching deaths or concepts.
