About this deal

To hold the crochet hook like a pencil, position the handle between your thumb and index finger with the middle finger supporting right above the hook’s shaft.

You may find you get a different result if you used the comfort cushion with a Bates hook, or with smaller diameter hooks. This issue, I would like to show you an easy method to modify a favorite hook to be more hand-friendly. According to Beth’s videos and her Etsy listing, each Chunky Boy can be slid onto any hook (for the size) and adjusted up or down depending on your personal grip. The hook style, your grip, the hook size, the type of handle and the material your hook uses will all impact how your yarn works up.I think one of the worst things is realizing that your favorite hobby can cause damage if you’re not careful. If you wish, you can mark the size of the hook on the outside of the cushion with the permanent marker. one thing i have done is to make a polymer clay handle on some of my smaller hooks and it does help. Even though this one felt more familiar in my hand, I noticed my right index finger was starting to cramp almost as soon as I got going. Generally, a narrow cushion on the handle is better for those that use a pencil hold, whereas the full roll is more comfortable for knife holders.

Appallingly weird, but the muscle memory can’t be broken, unfortunately – I’ve taken lessons from at least three difference crochet teachers, all to no avail. With the pencil grip, the index finger of the dominant hand is placed near the hook’s tip, opposite the thumb. BUT, Beth mentions in her care instructions to use a bit of rubbing alcohol to gently clean the handle when this happens. He just got some 5/8 inch doweling, cut into 4 inch pieces and drilled down into the end with drill bits that match whatever size hook I am using.Crocheting for extended periods can cause strain on your muscles and joints, leading to discomfort or even long-term injury. I honestly don’t think you need to stress out over what kind of hook person you are – if you like both, use both. You will also need scissors, a permanent marker, and a ruler if you don’t feel comfortable just jumping in with the scissors. i did see on their listing that you can cut off your favorite hook and use it in the egg, which would work better for me because i personally like that exact type of gray susan bates hook that you showed in the photo.

I removed the silicone grips from my whole set of Clovers in favor of using them with the ChunkyBoy.Though this might not make a huge difference (again, this is my experience and intuition speaking rather than science), I think the different materials will impact your tension. I suspect that tapered styles probably work well for pencil-grip knitters, whereas inline styles work well for knife-grippers.

I bought the egg shaped wooden oval handle (looks like a large egg) with the different crochet hooks screwed on. Overall, I LOVE this product and if I’m being honest, I’ll probably end up purchasing more in the future so I can have a set! I have problems when I crochet with small hooks as well, and I really like the Clover hook I have (size F since I use almost exclusively that size hook for amigurumi).Every week when I read your amazingly detailed and helpful article I think “Surely she’s run out of topics NOW ? Experimenting with various grip styles can allow you to find your most natural and comfortable hand position, ultimately improving your crocheting experience and the quality of your projects. Thank you for posting pictures of the hooks in an actual grip – exactly the kind of review I was looking for.
