About this deal

Thankfully, the additional stack didn’t affect the shoe on tempo and speed work, which is where the Rebel v3 shines. Built for the runner looking to do anything from an uptempo pace run to a long run, Rebel V2 will provide the perfect run, and with it's bold aesthetics you'll look good doing it too. Only if you’re a runner partial to a more stable ride will you want to give the new Rebel a wide berth. A point of note is that the different rubber patches—which are colour coded to boot—have different properties.

The heel does have a lot of exposed midsole through the midline of the heel and the sensation does provide a sense of bounce and cushioning. With the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2, the company applies what they’ve learned in the meantime in their attempt to perfect their fastest daily trainer. So there you have it - an unedited review of the New Balance FuelCell Rebel V2 from 4 Melbourne runners. There’s also a little more support in the heel, with a reinforced overlay at the bottom of the heel cup. Because this is the point in the gait cycle where you place all of your body weight into the ground, the forces required for stability can be quite high. Version 2 of the Rebel has been updated with a midsole that compresses more, is more flexible and has a softer outsole which makes the Rebel v2 more suited to slower paced, longer distance runs than V1. This did not influence the outcome of this review, written after running more than 50 miles in them. The complete collection of men’s and women’s New Balance FuelCell running shoes also includes the brilliantly bouncy FuelCell SuperComp trainers, another propulsive race day-geared design.

However, if you tend to prefer shoes specially designed for wide feet, you may find the Rebel v2 somewhat constrictive. The shoe does not have quite as much sole flaring as some other New Balance models, but does have some flaring noted in the forefoot on both sides and the heel medially. FuelCell Rebel v2 takes what made v1 a fan favorite and introduces a softer, more reactive midsole compound, better traction outsole, and improved upper fit.

Fans of the Rebel won’t be disappointed, although whether or not the new version is “better” than v2 will depend on the runner. Overall the on-foot feel reminds me a lot of v2 or at least what I remember of v2 when it was fresh. I find the length might be a fraction shorter than what I’ve experienced in the same size of other brands, but this is marginal. It’s soft and plush working well on recovery days or for longer runs, but the midsole is bouncy and energetic enough to speed things up on tempo days too.
