About this deal

The groundbreaking debut novel of Hugo Award-winning author Becky Chambers, one of the most imaginative voices in contemporary science fiction, is a truly galactic limited edition. The Hobbit had two maps; The Lord of the Rings had three, redrawn by his son Christopher Tolkien; The Silmarillion had two. Tolkien was critical of some of the early attempts, [T 11] but was happy to collaborate with the illustrator Pauline Baynes who prepared the iconic map of Middle-earth. I didn’t immediately conceive a desire to illustrate the books, though they had a huge influence on the type of drawings I did as a student of illustration and graphic design. The work of Alan Lee and John Howe — the two artists most closely associated with Tolkien’s world — is featured, along with that of many other talented artists and designers.

The goal of this book is provide the complete collection of Tolkien's art, but the word "art" can hardly be used to describe many of these illustrations which were only intended for the author's use as a tool.Wade Center, Wheaton College, and is a five-time winner of scholarship awards from the Mythopoeic Society. I love Tolkien and his wonderful Middle Earth, and quite honestly, it has had a major impact on my life. Tolkien’s treatment of the eternal struggle between good and evil, from stirring battles (‘as good as anything in Homer’, according to C. Many do not illustrate the final text, but represent moments of creation, illuminating Tolkienãs process of writing and design.

Having previously read Gary Russell's the Art of the Fellowship of the Ring and knowing that there are two companion volumes which focus on the second and third films in the trilogy I expected this fourth art of volume to be a sort of mashup of all three books and to contain much of the same content. Any serious or semi-serious fan of the LOTR books would likely be pretty fascinated by seeing the places from the books drawn by Tolkien himself.Hammond and Christina Scull, two of the worldãs leading Tolkien scholars, have edited the book and provide an expert introduction and comments. This book is very human and also very interesting at the same time, I learned quite a bit about Tolkien's work process when it comes to illustrations of all kinds and it gives depth to the story itself. I lost interest in the text after awhile, but I enjoyed studying the drawings with a magnifying glass (which I highly recommend using unless you have ultra-keen eyesight).

The Lord of the Rings Sketchbook provides a wealth of background information and will be of interest to those who know and love Tolkien's work, from books to films to DVDs, as well as to budding artists and illustrators interested in how to approach book illustration. Tolkien’s various creative writing and design moments, better grasping the amount of detail, reflection, and expression put into the conception of his complex epic fantasy world. As such, I found it interesting and often useful because it provided some visual imagery to compliment and occasionally clarify Tolkien's writing. Sometimes it would be interesting, but there is a limit to how much I want to hear about minute changes in the geography. This book is mostly filled with sketches - some very rudimentary - that Tolkien drew to help flesh out his ideas.Steeped in unrivalled magic and otherworldliness, its sweeping fantasy has touched the hearts of young and old alike. There is something about the alluring world of elves, dwarves and old magic which has proved exceptionally popular, working on the imagination both as an enthralling adventure story and, at a deeper level, as ’a comprehensive counter-myth to the story of the 20th century’ (Independent).
