About this deal

Many third-party brands are working to make compostable alternatives more widely available and for a cheaper rate. Bean-to-cup coffee machines handle every part of the process at the touch of a button – from grinding the beans, to making the coffee, to frothing the milk. Modern touches include an illuminated dispenser that moves up and down to accommodate different-sized cups, an easily removable drip tray (useful if you want to fill up even taller travel mugs) and a removable grounds tray behind it. After this has been done, simply pressing the button will cause coffee to be poured for the programmed duration.

The Potts can make coffee in three ways – with Nespresso pods, Dolce Gusto pods, or loose ground coffee. The Tassimo machine takes the brand’s own pods, rather than those Nespresso caps you might be more familiar with. Similarly sleek in looks and robust in build, it still offers oodles of substance to back up its style, but there's no separate water dispenser and it can't heat milk at the same time as pouring coffee. Rather than popping your pods into the top of the machine, you instead place the pods in a professional-looking portafilter which twists and locks into place. We always take this into consideration when undertaking our tests, ensuring we highlight all the best features for a range of needs and budgets. The performance, coffee quality and feel of materials all had to be worth the quantity you fork out for investment. Though more complex to use than most beginner-friendly machines, its quick start guide is accessibly clear and concise, making set-up a breeze, and the instructions are reassuringly thorough. Speaking of the pods, we loved that Lavazza’s eco caps can go in your food waste bin – they’re fully compostable, which was a huge draw fo We loved that this machine comes with a milk frother attached, which keeps things tidy, and you can make a speedy milky coffee without barista training.

It can make two coffees at once and has “Thermoblock” technology designed to keep it at a consistent temperature, but I did find that on occasion this machine took a while to heat up and then re-heat between making drinks. London chain Grind has produced a capsule machine that’s essentially a Nespresso machine, but with an espresso aesthetic. The machine is the product of a collaboration with Sage - the brand in first and fourth position on this list and one we trust here at Telegraph Towers. However, it would be a handy feature if you wanted to switch between your favourite Nepresso blends.Simply pop your chosen pod into its designated slot, close the lid to pierce it and wait while water is pushed through the grounds, extracting the coffee. Unlike other pod machines, the Sublime has a dual spout, allowing you to pour two cups at the same time. It poured consistently accurate coffees for our tester, who loved that the height of the coffee outlet can be altered to accommodate those taller, chunkier mugs we all reach for on chilly days.

For machines that didn’t have a built-in coffee grinder, we used a Cuinsinart Burr Mill to ensure continuity.Key specs – Pod type: Nespresso Vertuo pods; Drink sizes: Five (Espresso, Double Espresso, Gran Lungo, Mug, Alto); Bar pressure: N/A (uses centrifugal force); Water tank capacity: 1. the classic porcelain illy cup created by Italian designer Matteo Thun or one of its later variations designed by some of the greatest international artists and coffee lovers.

It also has the same PID digital temperature control as the models above, which you won’t find on many (if any) cheaper coffee makers. However, if you’re after a really good cup of coffee without too much thought, this is a great choice. The new Auto MilQ system also alters the temperature of the milk according to whether you’re using dairy, oat, soya or almond. Note that the milky drink program only has one preset volume; this keeps things simple, but if you’re after something stronger for that crack of dawn start, you’ll need to make another espresso separately to pour in. There’s no getting away from the fact it’s bulky and expensive for a pod coffee machine, but for ease of use and delicious coffee, it might just be worth it.
