Lewis, Hilary (January 12, 2023). "NAACP Image Awards 2023: Wakanda Forever, The Woman King Among Top Film Nominees". The Hollywood Reporter. Archived from the original on January 12, 2023 . Retrieved January 16, 2023. There’s no denying that Hannah Kent is a skilled wordsmith. As with her other books this one is beautifully written and is a joy to read for that quality alone. Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? If the world is judged by you, are you not competent to constitute the smallest law courts?

What would happen over the next 45 minutes would turn Brown and Hudner into unconventional heroes – honored as much for what they did off the battlefield as on it. One would win the U.S. military’s highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, the other the Distinguished Flying Cross. A Navy ship would be christened in honor of one man, a statue erected in honor of the other. Two American presidents – Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan – would publicly praise both. Many of these carrier airmen are identified in this story, including their method of flying together and how they protected each other. Also many factors relative to the war itself is included that I either didn’t know or didn’t understand their importance. This tale answered a lot of questions for me. The Korean War is often called the “Forgotten War,” and I have to confess that virtually everything I knew about it I learned from watching M*A*S*H while growing up. However, after reading Devotion, I will certainly never forget that war. William Bibbiani, The Wrap: "Whenever the camera is on Majors, whenever the planes soar through the deadly sky and whenever the score crescendos, J.D. Dillard's film comes pretty close to greatness. If only the rest of the movie didn't get in the way."Knight says she tried to talk about her father with Hudner and her uncles. But the memories seemed too painful for them, so she stopped asking questions. She found some answers for her pain, though, when she started reading the long, poetic love letters her father mailed to her mother. They were men ahead of their time,” Makos says. “If they could do it in their time, why can’t we do it in 2016?” D'Alessandro, Anthony (July 6, 2022). " 'Devotion': Jonathan Majors, Glen Powell Korean War Movie To Go Wide During Thanksgiving". Deadline Hollywood . Retrieved July 7, 2022. The basis is the true story of the emigration of Prussian Lutherans to Australia to escape oppression in their homeland. In 1838, a group of around 100 Lutherans sailed for South Australia from Hamburg on the Kristi. They were ‘Old Lutherans’, those who rejected the Prussian King’s Reformed church and who were being penalised for continuing to worship in their own way. They left their villages in what is now Poland but was then Germany on a three week journey by road and canal to Hamburg. They were financed by a wealthy Scottish businessman, George Fife Angas, who was also Chair of the South Australian Company. A deeply religious man himself, he was impressed by these self sufficient people, mainly farmers, who were reputedly hard working and had high moral standards. He was sure that they would be assets in the development of South Australia so he gave them a good land deal and did everything he could to facilitate their journey. Matthew Creith from Screen Rant wrote "Stylized and cultured, Devotion soars when least expected and is brought to life by its talented ensemble cast led by Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell." As the ending approached, it fell a bit short for me. I was expecting much more from the continuous build up throughout the book. Without spoiling it for anyone, I personally felt like it left me with some unanswered questions, which of course was the intent but I was hoping for more of a clean cut ending. So the ending fell a little flat for me. Otherwise a great debut. I am looking forward to what the author comes up with next! 3.5 stars Davis, Clayton (November 25, 2022). "Why Awards Voters Shouldn't Dismiss 'Bones and All,' 'Devotion' and 'Strange World' Despite Slow Box Office Starts". Variety . Retrieved November 28, 2022. Despite the inevitable Social Creature comparison, Devotion isn't quite as suspenseful or climactic, and its protagonists left less of an impression on me. Even so, I had a hard time putting this down; for a slow-moving story it never really loses momentum, and it has that 'need to know what happens next' quality that mercifully doesn't feel like a cop-out when nothing ever really happens.

Christensen told the audience that he had been on that snowy hillside with Brown “100 times” over the years trying to figure out what he could have done. Christensen, the flight instructor who took Brown under his wing, was so torn up when he heard how Brown died that he decided to become a helicopter rescue pilot. He saved the lives of six pilots during the Korean War, but his daughter said he kept thinking of the one he couldn’t save: a b "95TH OSCARS® SHORTLISTS IN 10 AWARD CATEGORIES ANNOUNCED". press.oscars.org . A captivating debut novel about a woman who falls into an overwhelming mutual obsession with the Upper East Side mother who hires her as a nanny John “Red” Parkinson who said the initial “hello” to Ms. Taylor in Cannes, and Charlie Kline were Marine infantry, on their first tour, and they became friends for life. Jesse and Tom didn’t know these Marines but they would provide air support to them and save their lives at the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea. Lieutenant Rober Reem, USMC, Red and Charlie’s squad leader, would save lives but by falling on a grenade in the gun pit that was being overrun by the NK. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.

A tug-at-the-heartstrings tale of bravery and selflessness, Devotion asks: How far would you go to save a friend? Ella's obsession with Lonnie is definitely unhealthy, and pretty creepy. She says some weird stuff, and it's evident very early on that she's going to cause some drama for the happy family. When Lonnie and her husband James took on Elle as their nanny they opened doors to whole new world for her. As Elle had been struggling to make ends meet, she is now whisked into a world of fancy homes, vacations and parties that she would never have been privy to in "her world" outside of her job. As Lonnie welcomed her into their lives with open arms, she also gained a friend in her. She loaned her clothes, treated her to things that a normal employer what not. She made her a part of the family and saw her as a confidant and friend. In fact, the character building in general is kind of ... shallow. I never properly understood who I was dealing with, so it left me fairly detached from the story. Extraordinarily daring . . . a remarkable novel, an almost visionary celebration of the death-defying power of the women’s love' - Sunday Times I really enjoy historical fiction based on real events, especially when I learn something new and especially when the author has done their research as meticulously as Hannah Kent. Her descriptions of the hardships these people took in their journey are vividly recreated with a real sense of time and place, from the suppression of their religion in Prussia to their six-month nightmare journey in a cramped, airless ship to their indomitable spirit in building a new life from the ground up in a strange country on the other side of the world. Kent’s writing is always beautiful with a poetic feel to it, particularly when she is describing the natural world that Hanne connects with so readily. Hanne’s love for Thea is at the heart of the novel, but also her love for her family and her community. Overall, a powerful and moving novel that will continue to resonate with me for some time. 4.5★
