About this deal

A: The electric stud finders can be divided into three main categories: edge finders, centre finders, instant finders. Being the most basic internal capacitor detectors, edge finders detect edges of a stud or other materials. Center stud finders usually use two sensors for registering separate readings of a dielectric constant of the wall to detect the stud centre . The most cutting-edge devices, instant stud finders, are equipped with multiple sensor plates and special algorithms for processing the sensor readings, which eliminate the need for the user to sweep them across the wall. When examining the device, we were pleasantly surprised that its case is protected against dust and water splashes in conformance with the IP54 standard. But taking into account that the device can be used outdoors, the availability of such protection would surely not go amiss as it improves the device reliability and prolongs its service life. Never miss a stud again. For those who need to find the center of a stud, either for securely hanging artwork or cutting the drywall along the stud’s centerline, the Zircon Stud Finder shines. I inserted a 9-volt battery, and the stud finder was ready to go. As I slid the tool across the surface of the test wall, diagonal lines appeared on either side of the digital display to indicate the sensors were moving over a stud. As soon as I reached the stud’s center, the lines met in a “V,” and a lighted red arrow appeared on the wall above. The Bosch Digital Multi-Scanner GMS120 is a powerhouse of a wall scanner. It has three modes; wood, metal, and electrical power, and is quite accurate with all three. In addition to the three scan modes, the Bosch has a center finder for studs, a magnetic sensor to show screws and other metal, and a ring that changes color depending on how close you are to the material you're seeking. The light-up ring changes from green (no stud sensed), to yellow (close), to red (directly on top of a stud). The ring is also hollow, allowing accurate marks right in the center of the sensor. For bonus points, the ring is wide enough to accept a permanent marker if that's your writing implement of choice. We appreciated not having to hold any buttons down to use it, which was more comfortable in awkward positions, like looking for ceiling joists. We also love the light-up screen, which made it easy to use in crawl spaces or other dimly lit areas. AC Scan is a dedicated Scan mode on certain MultiScanner® tools that enables the user to narrow the location of live AC (using the Interactive Calibration technique). With AC Scan, the display changes to indicate when the tool is moving towards or away from the live electricity. This interface enables the user to adjust the tool’s sensitivity to live AC. This procedure can be repeated multiple times, as needed.

Standard wall framing is 16 inches apart, on-center (OC), meaning the center of one stud will be exactly 16 inches from the center of the next. Alternate spacing is 19.2 inches and 24 inches apart, OC. Q. What does it mean when a stud finder beeps? That depends on the individual tool. Some beep when they detect the edge of a stud, while others beep when they detect the center of a stud. Some stud finders beep to let the user know they’ve just recalibrated. Q. Are outlets always on studs? Features like electrical outlets or light switches also show you stud locations, since they’re almost always nailed to a stud before wall surfaces go up.

Other than that, this device also comes outfitted with a muti-sense tech, meaning that it can detect multiple 'threats' at once. Rounding its features lineup is the automatic calibration function, making sure that you can use this thing without calibrating it manually first.

Looking for studs in all the wrong places? After investigating over 28 of the best stud finders on the market, we compared the top 12 models side-by-side. Read on to see our detailed results and find what works best for you, whether you're hanging a mirror or remodeling your entire kitchen. Caution: Electrical field locators may not detect live AC wires if wires are more than 2 inches from the scanned surface, in concrete, encased in conduit, present behind a plywood shear wall or metallic wall covering, or if moisture is present in the environment or scanned surface.Enhanced LCD display with Target Spotlight indicates approaching stud edge and illuminates when stud edge is detected As the stud finder approaches the edge of a stud, you’ll see an indicator that it detects a change in density. Mark this point with a pencil on a piece of masking tape or a post-it note. WireWarning ®detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded electrical wiring up to 2 in. (50 mm) deep
