About this deal

We don't run lab tests on instant cameras, but images captured by the Automat show crisp details. The lens aperture is narrow, so you'll need to use a flash for indoor shots, so red eye can rear its ugly head on occasion. There's no way to Photoshop that out of physical prints, of course. But if you scan images (as we did for this review), you can correct it just as you would a digital image. The power switch is located at the bottom of the lens board, with settings for off, A, C Flash, and C. You'll want to use A indoors with the flash, as it's really required to get a proper exposure. C Flash is recommended for use for long exposures with a flash in conjunction with the Bulb shutter, and C disables the flash and gives you a bit more control over exposure. Also on the bottom is the switch to toggle between the standard 1/125-second shutter speed and Bulb exposure. This camera is pitched as an “advanced” instant camera, which means that it has quite a few different controls. You can buy the Lomo Instant on its own, or in a kit which comes with lens attachments to expand its potential to create wide-angle, portrait and close-up shots. Lots of creative options, convenient size, great image quality, can save photos and view before printing

The included 6 x 4.5cm and 6 x 6cm masks let you change up from landscape or square formats. This is honestly a perfect choice for a first venture into medium format photography. A hazy image full of contrast and some distortion might not be acceptable on a modern digital camera, but these are all sought after qualities on a lomography camera. Also included in the box is a set of coloured flash filters, which you can simply slot into the flash housing on the front of the Lomo'Instant Automat. There’s yellow, green, blue and purple available - if you use them, your images will have a colour tint. There’s also a “splitzer”, which means that you can expose certain parts of the image, and not other parts - which can be handy for multiple exposures. There is also a lens cap which doubles up as a remote release, and also has a built in torch - which you might want to use for light painting. With one press of the shutter button, you’ll be taking four sequential pictures on a single frame. This allows you to uniquely capture action and movement without having to advance your film. I’ve got a section on the best lomography cameras later in this article, but for now, here are a few brands and cameras you can keep an eye out for: In said good light, images are bright and punchy, with a pleasing level of saturation and depth to them. Sometimes you may find if you’re using the lens adapters you see strange lens flares and so on - but again, this is arguably part of the charm of using a camera like this.

The fact that you can add on lenses to the front of the Lomo'Instant Automat also gives it wider appeal than a standard camera - although the close-up lens doesn’t seem to produce the results we would expect from it. The viewfinder has two distinct levels of brightness. Ignore the darker vignette area—it's not going to show up in your image. The bright square is your frame, but you have to remember that framing is not going to be precise. The viewfinder is offset from the lens, and that difference means the framing is going to vary a bit, especially when focusing close. As with most Lomography cameras, physical controls are kept to a minimum, but these all feel well placed and intuitive. The top of the lens board houses a dial to adjust the aperture—it's set at f/16 by default, but can be adjusted to f/8, f/11, f16, and f/22—along with a shutter release and a thread for a shutter release cable. Using a cable along with a tripod is recommended for long Bulb exposures. The switch labeled MX allows you to capture multiple exposures on a single frame; you can fire the shutter as many times as you like when it's in the MX position, and eject the frame by moving it down to an unlabeled position. Pictures from the Lomo Instant Glass Magellan were incredibly sharp. Its size made it convenient to carry around, and it performs well in low-light; it did not even require a lighten mode to take some night shots in the yellow streetlamp of a park. Lomography sells several versions of the Lomo’Instant Automat, some of which include add-on lenses, such as a "Splitzer" gizmo that divides the frame into different sectors, and a lens for shooting extreme close-ups, up to a foot from your subject. film is much larger than 35mm. The Holga 120N is paradoxically known for its dreamy image quality which makes great use of this medium format film. Lomo has carved out a good niche within the photographic community, providing fun and quirky cameras which are charming if not particularly precise or accurate. Lomography sells updated versions of vintage cameras which makes this style more accessible to newcomers.
